Quick answer

An oil burner puffback in a New York, NY or Long Island home blows oily soot through the house from the boiler room up, and wiping it smears it into paint and fabric. Shut the burner off, leave the soot alone and call. One published guide puts oily soot removal at about $1,400 to $4,700.

What a puffback leaves behind

A puffback is a small explosion inside the firebox when oil vapor ignites late. The burner pushes a burst of soot out through the flue joints and the burner housing, and the heating system carries it everywhere the air goes. The boiler room gets the worst of it, but ceilings two floors up can show it too.

Puffback soot is oily. It clings, it smears when touched and it settles on horizontal surfaces as a fine black film, then drifts into closets, drawers and fabric. Cleaning it is slow, careful work with degreasing cleaners and dry sponges, done top down, room by room.

Signs you've had a puffback

Some puffbacks are loud. Some are only noticed a day later.

A bang from the boiler room

A thump or bang as the burner starts is the ignition that pushes soot out.

Black strands in corners

Soot collects on cobwebs and turns them into dark strands along ceilings and corners.

Film on window sills and ledges

Oily soot settles on flat surfaces as a fine black layer that smears when touched.

Soot around radiators and registers

Heating outlets are where the soot enters each room, so they darken first.

A burnt oil smell upstairs

A fuel oil smell away from the boiler means the soot and fumes traveled with the heat.

Whole-house puffback soot

When a puffback happens with the heat running, soot reaches every room on the system. We test surfaces in each room, dry-sponge and HEPA vacuum ceilings and walls, then degrease what dry cleaning won't lift. Painted walls that stay shadowed after cleaning get sealed and repainted. Our page on smoke and soot cleanup explains why wiping first makes it worse.

Basement and boiler room puffbacks

Sometimes the heat was off and the soot stays downstairs. The boiler room, the stored boxes beside it and the joists above take the load. We clean the room, the pipes and the underside of the floor above, and bag anything porous that can't be cleaned. The burner itself is serviced by the oil company before it runs again.

Fabrics and contents after a puffback

Clothes, curtains, upholstery and rugs catch oily soot and hold its smell. Many clean well with the right process; some don't. We sort items room by room, clean what can be saved, list what can't for your claim and move heavier jobs to a contents pack-out so the house can be cleaned empty.

How a puffback job runs once you call

  1. Burner off

The burner stays off until the oil company has serviced it; we tell you what to ask them.

  2. Walk and test

We check every room on the heating system and test the soot.

  3. Protect and filter

Air scrubbers go in and clean areas get covered so soot isn't spread by the cleanup.

  4. Clean top down

Ceilings, walls, fixtures, heating units, then floors, dry methods before degreasers.

  5. Contents and odor

Belongings are cleaned or listed, and odor is treated once the surfaces are clean.

Why puffbacks are a Long Island call

Roughly a third of Long Island households heat with fuel oil, and the share is higher in Suffolk County, around 44 percent. Much of the housing in places like Levittown and Bellmore went up in the postwar decades with oil burners in full basements. Those burners run hardest from the first cold nights through spring, which is when the puffback calls come in, usually from a burner that was overdue for service.

What a puffback cleanup includes

The order matters as much as the cleaners.

  • A soot test in each room the heating system reaches
  • HEPA vacuuming and dry sponging before any wet cleaning
  • Degreasing of walls, trim, cabinets and hard surfaces
  • Cleaning of radiators, baseboard heat, registers and return grilles
  • Filter changes and duct cleaning on forced-air systems
  • Sorting and cleaning of clothes, curtains and belongings
  • Odor treatment after the surfaces are clean

  • Heat on or off

A puffback with the heat running spreads soot to every room on the system.

  • Rooms affected

More rooms means more ceilings, walls and fixtures to clean.

  • Heating type

Forced air carries soot further than radiators or baseboard.

  • Surfaces

Flat paint and raw wood absorb oily soot and may need sealing and paint.

  • Contents

Clothes, drapes and upholstery add sorting and cleaning time.

  • Odor

Fuel oil smell may need treatment after cleaning.

  • Storage areas

Packed basements and attics add handling of every box.
